In early September 2025, Afghanistan was struck by two powerful earthquakes that devastated large parts of Kunar and Nangarhar provinces. The first tremor, measuring 6.0 in magnitude, hit on September 1 and destroyed thousands of mud-brick homes that could not withstand the shaking. Just three days later, a stronger 6.2 magnitude quake followed, compounding the destruction. Together, these quakes killed more than 2,200 people, injured over 3,000, and displaced tens of thousands. The shallow depth of the quakes intensified their impact, and many mountain villages were completely flattened. Roads, bridges, and communication lines were badly damaged, making rescue operations extremely difficult. Survivors are struggling with a lack of clean water, food, and medical care, while ongoing aftershocks continue to spread fear. Already burdened by drought, poverty, and fragile infrastructure, Afghanistan now faces one of its deadliest humanitarian crises in recent years, with international aid urgently needed to prevent further suffering.
